Easter Letter 2017

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act. Mahatma Gandhi

Happy Easter! Selamat Hari Raya Paskah! 复活节快乐!
May the Risen Christ continue to bless us with joy and peace!

There was long procession from ground floor to Holy Family Church at second floor of the building on Palm Sunday morning mass.  All the statues were covered with purple cloths after Sunday evening Mass.

The Church was full for the Holy Thursday Mass.  After the Mass, the Blessed Sacrament was reserved at the temporary small chapel.  It was the meeting room, which was cleared up and decorated to reserve the Blessed Sacrament.  Several parishioners, young and old, stayed till the next morning and several other parishioners come and go for adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament since early Friday morning.

It is a customs in mainland not to eat breakfast for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  The station of the Cross was held at 3.00 p.m. followed by Liturgy of the Word, veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion.  The Blessed Sacrament was returned to the temporary small chapel after Holy Communion and the altar was stripped again.  The big Cross from Jerusalem, which was donated from one of the parishioners, was placed in front of the altar after the service.  Several parishioners still come and go for adoration till Saturday afternoon.
Eleven persons, adults and babies, were baptized during Easter Vigil Mass. When the Fr. Lu sprinkled the holy water, the parishioners hold the snacks or fruits or candies up to get the blessing.  Everyone got an Easter egg and every family can get a bottle of holy water as it’s the time to get a new holy water. There were around 800 people attending the Easter vigil Mass.
The parishioners got another Easter egg during Easter Sunday Mass.   After having lunch, three youth and I visited one of the youth in the hospital.
That’s all about my Easter with parishioners of Holy Family Church Shenzhen.  It was a solemn Easter celebration.
Below are short updates about the last four months of 2017.
We continue the Lenten Campaign at Holy Family Church Shenzhen by inviting the parishioners to donate their Lent saving money in a plastic folder for our charity works.
I attended a sacrament of matrimony in Chaonan  (http://anastasialindawatimm.blogspot.com/2017/01/sharing-2017-trip-to-chaonan.html) and also went to Guangzhou Cathedral with Fr. Lu, several parishioners and catechumens.  I continue my stay to meet several priests, sisters and parishioners (http://anastasialindawatimm.blogspot.com/2017/04/sharing-2017-trip-to-guangzhou.html).  I started an online bookstore (http://anastasialindawatimm.blogspot.com/2017/04/sharing-on-line-bookstore.html).

Sharing: On Line Bookstore

Several parishioners have online store by posting the pictures of their products on their online profile wall.  This gave me an idea to upload the free book “人生on God’s Line” on my online profile wall and then led me to open an online bookstore.
Here are several available books: 基督宗教圣诞前的耶稣 (Jesus Before Christianity by Albert Nolan, OP);现代人耶稣:一个彻底自由的灵修 (Jesus Today by Albert Nolan, OP) 感恩圣事:礼仪与神学 (Eucharist: Liturgy and Theology) 信与传 (Faith and Mission) 同性恋于天主教会 (Homosexuality and Catholic Church) 在加里肋亚湖上说情爱 (Love Story at Sea of Galilee); 性,爱与我 :正确的抉择 (Sex, Love and I),等等 and the favorite book is天主教婚姻甜蜜的秘决 (1st Catholic Guide for Lifelong Marriage).

Sharing: 2017 Trip to Guangzhou

Fr. Lu, several parishioners, three catechumens and I visited Guangzhou Cathedral on May 1, 2017.  Sr. Chen, who accompanied me during my stay in Our Lady of Lourdes Church - Shamian in 2012, gave an introduction about the Cathedral and the compound.  She is in charge of RCIA in Cathedral.  There are seven classes both in Cantonese and Putonghua for almost 100 catechumens.
I continued my stay in Guangzhou by visiting several priests, sisters, former parishioners of Holy Family Church Shenzhen, Indonesian Catholics, a staff of Huiling and parishioners including visiting Our Lady of Lourdes Church - Shamian, St. Francis Xavier’s Church – Dong Shan Kou and attending Sunday Mass at one of the Chapels.

It’s also a time to give away the book “人生on God’s Line,” listen to their stories and pray with the parishioners.

Sharing: 2017 Lenten Reflection Indonesian Catholic Community in Hong Kong

The Indonesian Chaplain Fr. Heribertus, SVD asked me to lead Lenten reflection for the Indonesian Catholic Community on Feb 26, 2017 at St. Paul Convent School Hall Hong Kong. There were more than 60 women attended it.
The music team led a short praise and worship before the reflection.  I gave a short introduction about the tradition of washing of the feet.  We watched the video of Pope Francis washed the feet in a prison in Rome on Holy Thursday 2015 while listened to the reading from John 13: 1-15.
Several volunteers helped to prepare the washing of feet ceremony.  There were four stations of washing of feet.  I washed the feet and prayed for the first person in each station and then she washed the feet and prayed for the second person, etc.
It was the first experience and very moving ceremony for many of them.  After tea break, I asked them to share their experiences in small group of four and then I
invited several of them to share to big group.

Sharing: 2017 Lunar New Year

Happy Lunar New Year
Selamat Hari Raya Imlek
新年快乐, 身体健康,万事如意, 平安,喜乐

I went to Shenzhen on the first day of Lunar New Year, just in time for the 求恩弥撒 (=qiu en mi sa/Petition Mass).  The Churches in China usually celebrate 感恩弥撒(=gan en mi sa/Thanksgiving Mass) on the last day of the year and Petition Mass on the first day of the New Year.  Fr. Lu gave general absolution because several (or many?) of them didn’t have time to go to Confession nor attend Sunday Masses.  After Mass, Fr. Lu and our parish council leader Mr. Li distributed red envelopes of holy card and money for all parishioners: adults and children.  There are more than 600 hundreds red envelopes were distributed.  Many of our parishioners went to their home town but there were many newcomers so the Church was still full.  http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2065264/chinas-massive-lunar-new-year-travel-rush-where-are-they-going
Not so many people attended the anticipated Sunday Mass and the Sunday Masses.    There were so few cars on the street for the first week of New Year.  One morning, there were only two passengers including myself on the bus. I celebrated the New Year and birthdays with Fr. Lu, seminarian Lin and the parishioners, mostly at their home.
Our daily Masses were changed to 9.00 a.m. during the first week of New Year so more people can attend it because it’s a long holiday for most of them.
I visited the inmates at Lo Wu Correctional Institution on the way back from Shenzhen on the six day of New Year and then visited the inmates at Tai Lam Centre for Women the next day.
I went back again to Shenzhen on eight day of New Year.  There are so many cars on the street again.  Our daily Masses are back to 7.45 a.m.
Fr. Lu, Mr. Guo, Mr. Xu and I visited fourteen sick and elderly parishioners on January 24, 2017 and brought fruits and red envelopes. They could receive Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion during the visit.  The eldest parishioner was 102 years old man, who is still attending Sunday Masses in our Church and keeping our Sunday Mass booklets orderly.  Fr. Lu and he sang several Latin songs.  We also visited our parish council leader Mr. Li in his office.

Sharing: 2017 The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Several volunteers and I organized Taize prayer for Christian Unity Prayer week at Holy Family Church on January 21, 2017.  We had supper together before the Taize prayer.
Fr. Lu led the opening prayer followed by short introduction about Christian Unity Prayer Week (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Week_of_Prayer_for_Christian_Unity) and Taize prayer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiz%C3%A9_Community) by Mr. Liu.
Mrs. Sun prepared the power point presentation for the Taize prayer and Ms. Yun led the prayer.  Ms. Zhao read the Biblical passage for this year theme “Reconciliation: For the love of Christ compels us (2 Cor 5: 14 – 20) and the prayer of the faithful http://www.hkecumenical.org/index.php/prayer-of-faithful.html.  Ms. Xie sang several prayers of the faithful too.
The Taize prayer ended around 7:45 p.m. followed by anticipated Sunday Mass at 8:00 p.m.

Sharing: 2017 Trip to Chaonan

Mr. Zhou and Ms. Chen, two volunteers at Holy Family Church, invited me to attend their sacrament of matrimony in Xin Min – Chaonan on January 16, 2017.  Mrs. Hu and I went by bus not long after the daily Mass.  It took around 4-5 hours from Shenzhen.  It’s a high bus with reclining seat and toilet.  Mr. Zhou and his brother met us at the bus stop and then they rent a small car to go to their village.
We had late lunch with gong fu tea at Mr. Zhou’s house besides having a conversation with his family.  His father accompanied us to walk to St. John’s Church at Xin Zhong village at around 5:00 p.m.  It’s one-floor building on the outside but there is second floor (around half of the building) on the inside for the mini Grotto, two bedrooms (one for guest priests or sisters and one for a layman) and one toilet.  Unfortunately, there is a public toilet in front of the Church.  Most of the villagers are not Catholics.  The old Church was built in 1882 and the latest renovation finished on 2014.  There are only one or two Masses during the year as the pastor should manage around 18 Churches.

The parishioners started to pray the evening prayer in Chaozhou language since 6:30 p.m. for more than an hour.  The pastor is not available that night so they invited Fr. Li came from another Church.  It’s a time for confession too.  The Church was full with their family and relatives and it’s only 1/3 of their clan as many of them are working outside the village and will go home during Chinese New Year.  The preferable Sacrament of Matrimony in this area is Mondays or Thursdays in Chaozhou language and they usually look for the good day based on the birthday of the bride and groom.  Their date of marriage was decided on the previous Sunday.
Mrs. Hu, Mrs. Ma, Mr. Zhou, his brother, his brother’s friend and I had late supper in a restaurant after the Mass.  Mrs. Hu and I stayed overnight at Mrs. Ma’s house.  Mrs. Ma told us that her mother usually goes to Holy Family Church so she showed us her mother’s picture and I recognize her, small world!  I invited Mrs. Ma to pray together as his husband would have surgery the next morning. The surgery went well.
Mrs. Ma dropped us at Mr. Zhou’s house to have breakfast and then left for Shenzhen first by motorcycle with passenger seats on the back and then by bus. They gave me a bag of sweet potatoes from their farm.

Sharing: Jan 2017 Volunteer Training at St. Anthony’s Church

Four youth of St. Anthony’s Church Shenzhen asked Fr. Lu about our youth ministry so Fr. Lu invited Mr. Wu and me to have a lunch meeting with them on January 8, 2017.  Fr. Lu introduced me as the person in charge for the youth ministry.
Ms. Zhuo asked my suggestion about the youth training to be held at St. Anthony’s Church before Chinese New Year so I offered her to organize youth training on “How to be an effective volunteer?” on January 14 because we will organize youth gathering on “Christian Unity Prayer Week” at Holy Family Church on January 21.   Ms. Zhuo and her team agreed to my suggestion so we were communicating through WeChat apps.  They were proactively asking and providing what is needed for the training including preparing the link of the registration, snack and banner.  I returned to Hong Kong on January 10, 2017 and went back to Shenzhen on January 14, 2017 in time for the training.
Fr. Lu led the praise and worship while the pastoral sister of St. Anthony’s Church Sr. Jiao played the piano, followed by ice breaking by Mr. Wu.  The pastor of St. Anthony’s Church gave a short talk on his hope to have youth ministry in their Church.
I asked Mr. Wu to lead the first habit as he attended this training last June 2015 at Holy Family Church.  I led the rest of the training.  There were four habits with 15 minutes break in between two habits.
Around 30 volunteers attended it.  Unfortunately we were a little bit late to start and we need to leave the classroom not later than 6.00 p.m. so we didn’t have the chance to have a group report for the two habits.
I edited a little bit the power point of the program prepared by Fr. Bruno for a Putonghua workshop in Maryknoll Stanley House Hong Kong.   The training was based on “8 Habits of Highly Effective People.” There was an activity, Bible passage before mentioning each habit followed by small group discussion and group report.   My tutor helped me to add the details of the activities on the power point so that it will be easier to be understood than only listening to my instruction.  Both Mr. Wu and I asked all of them to read the Bible passage.
It’s an opportunity to reach out to more people in mainland as my wish.
I attended the anticipated Mass at St. Anthony’s Church after having dinner with one of the parishioners, who let me stay in her studio apartment for free since October 2012.

Sharing: 2016 Holy Family Feast Day

The Mass for the Holy Family Feast Day at Holy Family Church Shenzhen was celebrated on December 31, 2016 2:30 p.m. We invited other the priests, sisters and parishioners from other Churches to attend the Mass.  Fr. Zhang was the main celebrant, who just arrived from Beijing that morning and would leave the same day.  There were 9 other priests and 12 sisters including me.  The leader of CCPA Shenzhen is among the guests during the mass and dinner at the nearby restaurant.

Fr. Lu cancelled the renewal of marriage vows ceremony around one hour before the Mass as there was only one couple and he knew that they would be shy to do it alone.
The Sunday School students performed after the Mass.  There were more than 500 people attending the Mass.
Several parishioners and I attended the Mother of God Feast Day at Mother of God Church, Yantian-Shenzhen after our Sunday Morning Mass.  There were 4 priests, 4 sisters and around 300 people attending the Mass.  Several sisters and I visited Hui Ling Shenzhen, just walking distance from the Church.  There was a reception after the Mass at the restaurant nearby.
