Sharing: Urban Farming (updated on Mar 25, 2021)

Sr. Agnes took care of our garden at Boundary Street Convent for years.  She planted flower and vegetable including sweet potato leaves.  When she returned to Maryknoll Sisters Center in 2017, our cleaner lady took care the sweet potato leaves including put excreta of her cats and it grew very well.  I shared the leaves with others once a while.

A volunteer helped to plant it in the side yard of Rosary Chapel Hung Shui Kiu as I brought the leaves last year.

Early this year Mrs. Rita invited me to visit Holly Farm and bought for me a vegetable with intention to grow it.  I started to try hydroponics but it’s failed.

As there was an empty pot in our side yard so I planted the sweet potato leaves.  It grows well.  Mrs.  Lee helped to water it too.  Failed in hydroponics, back to soil!

Gardening is not my passion but growing sweet potato leaves is easy besides I can stir and fry it on my day of cooking in our community.  When I was in junior high school, I created a small garden in our backyard.  I picked up several buckets of the excreta from bird’s house next door as fertilizer.    I stopped to take care of it as I move out for my senior high school and then I always out of home.

It's my small contribution to sustainable living https://www.conserve-energy-future.com/15-ideas-for-sustainable-living.php.

Lets not buy things we don’t need with the money we don’t have to impress the people we don’t know.

One of our volunteers plants banana and papaya trees on our yard so I cut the banana leaves and papaya leaves for several Indonesians.  There are several Indonesian dishes and snacks wrapped in banana leaves.  It’s not easy to get banana leaves and papaya leaves in Hong Kong.

I pulled out the sweet potato in the pot because the leaves are so small and planned to replace it with the new ones.  I was surprise that there are several mini sweet potatoes inside the soil sand.
